Rome, the Eternal City, is a captivating blend of history and culture. And actually, dare I say that it’s one of the best cities in Europe to visit as a couple.

We had long dreamed of seeing the Colosseum together, strolling through cobblestone streets, admiring the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain – and before we visited, we weren’t sure if we’d enjoy it, as it gets so much hype. But, honestly, we fell in love with Rome the first time and have since visited a couple more times!

And for couples, Rome offers a whole host of couple-friendly experiences. From leisurely strolls through ancient streets to intimate dinners, the city is a lover’s paradise.

So, here’s our guide to the best things couples can do to make the most of their Rome holiday.

11 Best Things for Couples to Do in Rome

1. The Pantheon

The Oculus!

This is one of the best-preserved monuments of Ancient Rome – and it’s actually my husband’s favorite Rome attraction! The Pantheon, with its massive dome and open oculus, is jaw-dropping inside and out.

The oculus is the most important feature of the Pantheon – it’s 9 meters in diameter and it’s so much more than an aesthetic choice. The architect, by opening up the apex of its dome, meant the dome could survive for thousands of years!

One of the most important dates here is April 21st – the founding date of Rome, when at noon, the sun enters through the oculus and perfectly lights up the entrance.

Pro Tip: Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and catch that beautiful light shining through the oculus.

2. Colosseum

It is absolutely a must-visit here in Rome!

Walking up to the Colosseum!

Built between 72 and 80 AD during the reigns of Emperors Vespasian and Titus, this massive arena could fit up to 80,000 people. Back in the day, it was mainly used for gladiator fights, public spectacles, animal hunts, and even mock sea battles.

The Colosseum’s design features a cool system of vaults and arches, showing off the advanced building techniques of the time. Even though it’s taken a beating from natural disasters and stone thieves over the years, it’s still one of Rome’s top tourist spots. And visiting here will give you a peek into the grandeur and the wild entertainment scene of ancient Rome.

For a unique experience, opt for a night tour when the Colosseum is beautifully illuminated, providing a magical experience unlike any other.

Make the most of your visit here by snagging exclusive access to the Arena Floor on this tour – something most tourists miss out on. Take your time wandering around while an audio guide explains the history of fighters and spectators. Then, you’ll tag along with your guide to check out the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

3. St. Peter’s Basilica

And the interior!

This is hands down one of the most impressive churches I’ve ever stepped foot in – and it’s free to enter (it’s perfect if you’re visiting Rome on a budget). Located in Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica is filled with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Bernini, and others.

Heads-up: You’ll need to go through security and dress modestly (no bare shoulders or short shorts), but it’s absolutely worth the visit.

4. Vatican Museum/ Sistine Chapel

So stunning!

Home to one of the world’s most impressive art collections, the museums feature works by Michelangelo, Raphael, and countless other masters.

We loved wandering through the opulent halls here, and our favorite part was the world-famous Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s breathtaking ceiling frescoes really moved us. It was quite busy when we visited – on a weekday in July, so I’d say to make the experience even more special as a couple, book a private or early morning tour to explore the museums without the usual crowds.

This skip-the-line guided tour allows you to sidestep the long lines at the Vatican City’s most popular attractions. With a tour guide, you’ll explore the numerous rooms of the Vatican Museums and marvel at the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. Your tour will end in St. Peter’s Basilica.

💡 Top tip: Generally, many of Rome’s state-run museums and archaeological sites offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. This includes renowned places like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, as well as various art galleries and historical museums. Additionally, museums in the Vatican City occasionally have special free entry days – though these are not as regular, they do offer opportunities to explore the Vatican Museums without an entrance fee.

5. Villa Borghese

This is basically Rome’s version of Central Park. You can rent a bike, bring a picnic, or just stroll around the shady paths. The views from the Pincian Terrace (Terrazza del Pincio) are chef’s kiss. I always head there around sunset – it’s absolutely magical. Yes, as the sun sets over Rome, enjoy the peace and each other’s company amid the beauty of the park.

The Borghese Gallery is also located inside the park and is worth visiting.

6. Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci)

This small, peaceful park on the Aventine Hill offers one of the best panoramic views of Rome. It’s a quiet escape from the city buzz, filled with citrus trees, marble benches, and romantic vibes. Don’t miss the nearby Keyhole of Rome – it’s a quirky hidden gem!

7. The Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain

I still remember the first time I tossed a coin into the Trevi Fountain (over my shoulder, of course – gotta come back, right?). As you may know, legend has it that if you toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, you are guaranteed to return to Rome. This tradition, which dates back to the ancient Romans, is a must-do for couples.

The fountain, with its intricate sculptures and cascading water, is a masterpiece of Baroque art and offers a picturesque photo spot for a couple’s photo!

Both the fountain and the Spanish Steps are especially magical early in the morning or at night when the crowds thin out.

Pro Tip: Don’t sit or eat on the Spanish Steps – it’s actually prohibited and can get you fined!

8. Piazza Navona

This beautiful square used to be a Roman stadium, and today it’s a lively spot filled with street artists, fountains, and people just soaking up the vibe. You’ll find Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers here.

9. Explore Trastevere

This charming, bohemian neighborhood is my go-to for wandering aimlessly with my husband (in the best way). Cobbled streets, colorful buildings, ivy-covered facades – it’s like walking through a movie set.

Trastevere exudes an old-world charm, and I love to spend an afternoon here exploring the quaint boutiques and artisan shops, and stopping off for a coffee or a gelato.

As the sun sets, the neighborhood comes alive with street musicians and lively trattorias – it really is the ideal setting for a romantic dinner.

And this twilight food tour of the neighborhood is well-rated and is perfect for couples!

10. Take a boat ride on the Tiber River

For a unique view of Rome, why not take a boat ride along the Tiber River at sunset? As you glide past the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s Basilica, the gentle lapping of the water and the warm glow of the setting sun create the perfect romantic atmosphere. Some boat tours even offer dinner cruises; you can check them out here!

11. Attend an Opera or Classical Music Concert

Rome hosts numerous opera performances and classical music concerts throughout the year, often held in historic venues that add to the magic!

One of the most renowned venues is the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, which shows a world-class lineup of operas, ballets, and concerts throughout the year. Another smaller, more intimate option is the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, which hosts classical music performances.

And another must-visit is the Auditorium Parco della Musica, a modern architectural marvel that frequently features performances by the prestigious Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest musical institutions in the world. During the summer, the Baths of Caracalla also hosts opera performances.

Where to Stay in Rome:

  • Portrait Roma is an intimate boutique Rome hotel located right by the Spanish Steps. Everything about this hotel feels romantic – from the beautifully designed suites to the candlelit rooftop terrace. It’s quiet, private, and perfect for a couple’s getaway. The rooms feel more like luxury apartments than hotel rooms, and the staff really goes above and beyond. A room here starts from €800 euros per night.
  • If you’d prefer to stay near The Vatican, then I recommend Boutique Hotel Piedra Rome City Centre a 3-star, stylish hotel that’s just 600 meters from the Vatican. A room here averages 170 euros per night.
  • If you want to be right in the heart of Rome, Albergo del Senato is unbeatable. This elegant hotel sits directly beside the Pantheon, and some rooms have a perfect view of the ancient temple. The rooftop terrace is stunning, especially at sunset. The location is ideal: within minutes you can walk to Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and so many great restaurants and cafés. A room here costs around €250 euros per night.

Why we use an eSIM when we travel:

It’s always worth it for us to get an eSIM for international travel! It’s really easy (and quick) to set up, and it always works out cheaper than using the international plan my at-home cell provider offers. For this particular trip and for all our European vacations, we like to use the Holafly eSIM for Europe.

Now, what is an eSIM you may ask? An eSIM is like a new-age version of the old physical SIM card you used to pop into your phone. But instead of being a little card you can remove, an eSIM is built right into your phone or device.

This means you don’t have to fuss with swapping out SIM cards when you want to change mobile networks – it’s all done digitally and gives you way more flexibility. You can even add different destinations to your existing eSIM, making it super easy to switch plans, which is a real perk for frequent travelers.

Travel Insurance for Italy/ Europe:

At first glance, skipping travel insurance may seem like a great way to save some money. However, if you end up losing your luggage, having your flights cancelled, or getting sick – it is a decision you’ll probably regret. Thinking nothing will happen is definitely a mistake, and without travel insurance, it’s one that will end up costing you – big time.

✅ Our fix: Shop around for budget-friendly travel insurance based on your trip length and destination while paying attention to what it covers. We like to use Auras Travel Insurance for our trips!
