Highlighting 5 of the best day trips from Naples – I’ve been to Naples a few times now and done all of the below tours, so I know what’s worth doing!
Naples is a bit of a love it or hate it city, but we actually loved it – the city’s narrow streets are alive with energy, it’s really busy and loud. But, despite its chaotic charm, we loved the warm and friendly locals, vibrant culture, and the ever-present sense of history here.
All that, coupled with the stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and the glistening Bay of Naples, meant that Naples was a worthy last stop on our month in Italy itinerary.
And even though we loved Naples, I understand that if you have a couple of days to spend in the city, you may be itching to escape the hustle and bustle. And that’s where I come in with a selection of gorgeous day trips from Naples.
The Best Guided Tours We Did from Naples
1. Day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius

- Tour length: 8 hours
- Price: €75
Visiting Pompeii is one of my favorite tours I’ve done in Italy – this day trip to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius from Naples is the one we did. And although we like to DIY most things on our travels, we opted to do a guided tour here as it meant we could fully relax without having to worry about transport or pre-booking tickets.
Way back in the year 79 A.D., a huge volcanic eruption wiped out the city of Pompeii. The ash from the eruption preserved the city in an epic way. On your visit here, you will see bodies encased in ash stuck in positions to protect themselves from the eruption. Bodies rolled up in a ball, bodies with their hands outstretched as if to stop the oncoming lava. There are even dogs in these same positions.
It’s astounding that 2,000 years later, we can witness Pompeii in almost pristine condition. It is honestly like a movie set.

Did you know – Pompeii is visited by over 2.5 million tourists annually! It’s one of the most-visited dark tourism sites in the world.
Afterwards, you will travel up the slopes of the volcano by 4×4 vehicle. You will have to hike some of the way as the vehicle can’t go completely to the time. Enjoy time to explore the crater of Mount Vesuvius before returning to Naples.

2. Pompeii & Herculaneum

- Tour length: 11 hours
- Price: €64
Pompeii and Herculaneum stand as some of the most significant Roman archaeological sites globally, yet their ruins can be tricky to appreciate if you’re not an expert. On this small-group guided tour, you’ll visit both Pompeii & Herculaneum (not Mt Vesuvius) led by a professional archaeologist. So, you can truly appreciate the history of the places and all the sights you’re seeing!
You’ll get to delve into the rich history and architecture of these cities that were both buried by Mt. Vesuvius’s eruption in AD 79. This full-day tour (allow around 11 hours if departing from Naples) leaves from Starhotels Terminus in Naples, includes all admission tickets as well as a train ride between Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Prices cost around €64 euros per person for this well-rated tour.
3. The towns along the Amalfi Coast

- Tour length: 8 hours
- Price: €60
The Amalfi Coast, a stunning stretch of coastline in southern Italy, is a dream destination for many. And this area is known for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages.
It really is a tourist magnet – and it was incredibly busy when we visited in August. We visited by public bus, and honestly, I don’t recommend it as the bus was packed and we had to wait a long time for a bus from Positano to Amalfi as they were all full.
And so to take the stress, I recommend this day trip from Naples with reliable private transport via coach. It stops at Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi in one streamlined itinerary. And includes free time in each. It also includes pick-up and drop-off from various locations across Naples, so you can focus on the views instead of logistics.
You can also upgrade to include a tasty all-inclusive lunch; prices for this tour start from €60 per person.
4. Boat tour of the Amalfi Coast

- Tour length: 10-11 hours
- Price: €174
Exploring the Amalfi Coast only by land means overlooking some of its most breathtaking sights. And this guided boat tour presents an opportunity to discover the UNESCO-listed coastline from the sea, providing stunning views of hidden beaches and intriguing caves, with stops for swimming and snorkeling along the journey. Plus, the tour allows time to visit the charming towns of Amalfi and Positano. A light lunch, snacks, and drinks are included on board.
Minibus transfers from Star Hotel Terminus in Naples to the port of Piano de Sorrento are included, and it’s from here you’ll board your boat. Prices for this tour start from €174 and it’s likely to sell out.
5. Capri & the Blue Grotto

- Tour length: 9 hours
- Price: €140
Exploring Capri’s top attractions in just one day can be a challenge. However, this guided tour streamlines the experience by offering quick ferry and shuttle bus transportation, allowing you to visit the island’s highlights in just a few hours.
You’ll start your adventure with a visit to the Blue Grotto, then head to Anacapri for some sightseeing – we recommend checking out Villa San Michele while here. You’ll then end your day with leisure time in Capri town before taking the hydrofoil (boat) back to the mainland.
This tour costs from 140 euros per person and is the top-booked tour from Naples, so, it will sell out quickly.
🛏️ Where to stay in Naples:
Villa Elisio Hotel is a casual 3-star hotel set in a 1700s building. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the location is great, just a short walk to the National Archaelogical Museum. There’s a lovely courtyard in the center of the hotel, too.
📅 When to visit Naples:
I’d say that the best months to visit Naples are May, June, and September. Because the weather is warm but not overly hot – ideal for sightseeing in the city and ticking off the day trips I listed above. These months are also outside of the peak tourist season, meaning a more relaxed, less-busy experience for you!
