Planning a vacation to Sydney and not sure where to stay? Trust me, I get it. Sydney is huge, and with hundreds of hotels spread across dozens of neighborhoods, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. They all look amazing on the booking sites, don’t they?
I lived in Sydney for over 4 years, so I’ve explored all of the areas below multiple times and even lived in many of them (yep, during my time here I’ve called Bondi Beach, Surry Hills, The Rocks and Potts Point home). And so I know exactly which areas are worth staying in. And all the hotels I recommend below are places I’ve personally stayed at and would happily stay at again.
Just like with any big city, the neighborhood you choose can completely change your experience. So let’s take a look at the best areas in Sydney and the best hotels in each one.
Which area of Sydney should I stay in?
There are a couple of main parts of Sydney that I always recommend to visitors: Darling Harbour, Circular Quay/ The Rocks, Potts Point, Surry Hills, Bondi Beach & Newtown. Each has its own charm, atmosphere, and convenience.
Darling Harbour (Best for families)
This vibrant waterfront precinct offers the perfect blend of leisure, entertainment, and convenience. With its central location, you’ll find yourself within easy walking distance of iconic attractions such as the Sydney Aquarium, the Australian National Maritime Museum, and the bustling Harbourside Shopping Centre.
Darling Harbour is also home to a wide array of restaurants and it’s well-connected by public transport, making it easy to explore other parts of Sydney. Overall, the stunning views of the harbour and the lively atmosphere make it a picturesque and fun base for your Sydney adventure.

- You can walk everywhere
- Safe, lively, and full of restaurants
- Ideal for first-time visitors to Sydney
Keep in mind:
- Hotels here tend to be expensive
- It can get crowded in peak season
Our favorite hotel here: Novotel on Darling Harbour
This huge hotel features an outdoor pool, gym and tennis court. And the rooms are spacious and comfortable and many offer a view of Darling Harbour. A room here costs around $250 AUD per night.
Circular Quay (Perfect for couples)
If you want to be in the heart of the city’s action without staying in the CBD, Circular Quay is an ideal location. It’s where you can see Sydney’s most famous landmarks – the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as the Royal Botanic Garden.
It’s also here that you can catch the ferry to Manly and many other spots in the greater Sydney area.

My favorite hotel here – Park Hyatt Sydney
Right on the waterfront, this luxurious hotel boasts breathtaking views of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. There’s a rooftop pool (with wow views), a world-class spa, and an excellent on-site restaurant.
The Rocks (Historic and so photogenic)
Next door – The Rocks, Sydney’s oldest neighborhood, offers a historic charm with cobblestone streets, heritage buildings, and a vibrant weekend market. Accommodations range from luxury hotels with stunning harbour views to charming boutique stays nestled within historic terraces.

Our favorite hotel here – The Russell Boutique Hotel
This hotel is a great option here. It’s set in a converted historic building and combines heritage charm with modern amenities, offering a unique and cozy atmosphere.
Potts Point (A quieter alternative)
This area, known for its art deco architecture and leafy streets, offers a charming village-like atmosphere with a hint of sophistication. Potts Point is home to a diverse range of eateries, from upscale dining establishments to cozy cafes, making it a food lover’s paradise. The area also boasts a variety of boutique hotels and there’s easy access to public transport, making it a convenient base for exploring the city.
There’s also a lovely waterfront area here with a great cafe – called The Lookout.

- Central but not crowded
- Safe and walkable
Keep in mind:
- Mostly boutique hotels only
- Not as many hotel options and restaurant options
My favorite hotel here – Ovolo Woolloomooloo
Just a short walk from the centre of Potts Point in Woolloomooloo, this unique hotel is set in a heritage-listed wharf building and offers a blend of contemporary design with stunning views of Sydney Harbour. The rooms here are spacious and stylish and it has a state-of-the-art gym and an indoor pool.
Surry Hills (If you like to party!)
If you appreciate a vibrant cultural scene, Surry Hills is definitely a location to consider. Known for its eclectic mix of cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops, Surry Hills is a hub of creativity and style. The area boasts a lively nightlife with numerous bars and night clubs.
Staying in Surry Hills places you in walking distance of the city center, while also providing a more laid-back, bohemian atmosphere. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and beautifully restored terrace houses add to its unique character, making it a favorite with younger travelers especially.

- Lots of bars/ nightclubs – great area for partying

Our favorite hotel here – Pullman Sydney Hyde Park
Located just opposite Surry Hills and next door to leafy Hyde Park this hotel is still within walking distance to all of Sydney’s top attractions. It boasts a rooftop pool with epic city views, a gym, and stylish rooms (many with city views). Expect to pay approx. $250 AUD per night here.
Bondi Beach (For beach lovers)
No trip to Sydney would be complete without a visit to its world-famous beaches. Bondi Beach is known world-wide, just a short drive from the city center, offers a quintessential Australian beach experience.
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is a must-do, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. Staying in Bondi Beach provides a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling city, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops to explore.

- Great area for families in Sydney
- Lots of restaurants, cafes
Keep in mind:
- Can’t walk to the city centre so reliant on taxis/ public transport
- Can get very crowded in the summer
Our favorite hotel here: Miss Baker’s Boutique Accommodation Bondi Beach
Located a couple of blocks back from the world-famous Bondi Beach, this studio apartment with a balcony is a brilliant option. The studio comes with a kitchenette, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and access to a communal garden. Rates average $260 AUD per night.
Newtown (A quirky alternative)
If you’re searching for a neighborhood that embodies Sydney’s indie spirit, look no further than Newtown. Known for its alternative vibe, Newtown is a melting pot of cultures and creativity.
The main thoroughfare, King Street, is lined with vintage shops, quirky boutiques, and an array of international cuisines. The neighborhood’s vibrant arts scene is showcased through its street art, live music venues, and theaters. It’s an ideal spot if you’re seeking something different from the typical tourist path.

- Hotels are reasonable priced
- Great transport connections
- Cool/ quirky vibe

- Furthest from the city centre
Where I’d stay here – The Urban Newtown
This boutique hotel perfectly captures the vibrant and eclectic spirit of its surroundings. Located in the heart of Newtown, it offers easy access to the area’s lively arts scene, unique cafes, and diverse dining options. The rooms are stylishly designed with modern amenities.

I use Booking.com for all of our hotel stays. And if we’re traveling on a budget, I like to use Hostelworld to book a hostel.
3. Renting a Car
We tend to always book our rental car through Discover Cars. This is a search engine for rental cars and allows you to filter by price if you’re on a budget or by vehicle type if there’s a specific car you’re after.
4. Tours
I use Viator or Get Your Guide to book any guided tours we plan on doing. I find Viator particularly good for the USA, Canada & New Zealand, and Get Your Guide is great for Europe.
5. Travel Sim Card
An eSIM for Australia is a great idea if you’re coming to Sydney for more than a week. As that way, you won’t need to change your number or remove the physical SIM from your phone. They are so handy and cheap, too. Obviously make sure your phone is compatible with an eSIM first.
6. Airport Pick-Ups
Instead of cabs, we book with welcome pickup to get from the airport to our hotel. Why did we do that? The drivers from Welcome Pickups are English speaking and you’ll pay a flat rate. So, you know exactly how much you’re paying before hopping in.
7. Compensation for Delayed or Canceled Flights
You can easily claim compensation for a canceled or delayed flight with the website – AirHelp. You just input your flight details and some personal information, and AirHelp will handle the rest.
