Sydney is one of my favorite cities in the world – it’s stunning, the weather is (usually) great, and it just has an inimitable laid-back vibe that we haven’t experienced in any other major city we’ve visited (yet!) I lived in Sydney for over 4 years, and I may be biased, but Sydney is 10/10 awesome. There really is so much to do here – oh, and the dining scene is unbeatable – but sometimes you just need to get away from the busyness and relax.
Even though Sydney is chilled-out, it’s still a big city, so I completely get it if you’re keen for some peace and quiet during your vacation here. Which is why I’ve come up with this list of some cool places to escape to, close to the city. And having lived in Sydney for a couple of years, we’ve personally experienced all of them.
All of the places listed here are under a 2-hour drive from the city, so they are easily reachable for a day trip.
Yes, in this blog, I’ve cherry-picked out 9 incredible day trips from Sydney.
Where to go for a day trip from Sydney?

I suppose my answer depends on what you want to get from the day trip – if you want to relax on a stunning sandy beach, I recommend Palm Beach (around an hour’s drive from Sydney). Or if you’re keen to do some hiking and see some unique scenery, you can’t go wrong with the Blue Mountains (a 90-minute drive from the city).
And a more off-the-beaten-path option is Terrigal on the Central Coast (an hour and 20-minute drive from the city center).
What are the best day trips by train from Sydney?
The easiest places to get to by train from Sydney for a day trip include Wollongong (you can catch the train directly from Central Station and it will take 90 minutes) and Bowral in the Southern Highlands, which involves a 1.5-hour train ride from Central Station.
Tell me about the top-rated guided day tours from Sydney?

Some of our favorite guided tours from Sydney include this Blue Mountains tour which includes a visit to Featherdale wildlife park. It visits Echo Point (the best view of the mountains), the pretty mountain village of Leura, Scenic World, and Featherdale Wildlife Park. It costs from $210 AUD per person.
And this guided tour to the Royal National Park, we also highly recommend. It includes a picnic at Wattamolla Beach and a hike to the iconic Wedding Cake Rock. It costs $350 AUD per person.

Renting a Car in Sydney
It’s so worth renting a car in Australia. And although it can be expensive to do so, you will be able to go to all of the places listed below without being constrained by a timetable. Like you would if you were to do a guided tour.
The cost of renting a car in Sydney can be expensive. However, there are some ways you can save money. We tend to always book our rental car through Discover Cars. This is a search engine for rental cars and allows you to filter by price if you’re on a budget or by vehicle type if there’s a specific car you’re after.
Blue Mountains

Given that it is only a 90-minute drive from Sydney, a visit to the Blue Mountains National Park should be on everyone’s Sydney bucket list. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to rugged cliffs, deep canyons, and eucalyptus-filled valleys.
The iconic Three Sisters rock formation, best seen from Echo Point, is arguably the park’s highlight. However, the variety of hiking trails here, including the legendary Grand Canyon walking track, is one of our top things to do. As well as riding the cable car at Scenic World. You’ll also find the world’s oldest limestone caves and the world’s steepest railway here, which is not for the faint-hearted!

We recommend spending some time wandering around the cute mountain towns here – we love Leura, and Katoomba is cool, too. It is the largest town here. But, to us, Leura is much more charming.
The village is renowned for its beautiful gardens, especially during the annual Leura Gardens Festival, where vibrant blooms and expertly curated landscapes are on full display. And we loved strolling along the Leura Mall, which is lined with quaint shops, cafes, and heritage buildings that exude a sort of timeless charm.

🚗 Getting here from Sydney:
It’s a 90-minute drive or get the train from Central Station to Katoomba (it’s a 2-hour journey). From Katoomba, public buses go to places like Echo Point and the Three Sisters, Scenic World, etc. Or you could buy a full-day ticket for the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus (a hop-on, hop-off service).
Alternatively, the guided tour we recommend doing to the Blue Mountains is this tour which includes a visit to a wildlife park. It’s around 10 hours long and stops at the highlights of the area – Echo Point (the best view of the mountains), the pretty mountain village of Leura, Scenic World, Featherdale Wildlife Park, and the Echo Point viewpoint.
Central Coast (Avoca Beach or Terrigal)

The Central Coast is the perfect destination for a day trip from Sydney, as it’s only an hour and 20-minute drive away or an easy hour and 15-minute train ride. Not only is it home to one of the most stunning coastlines in New South Wales, including gorgeous beaches (we love Budgewoi Beach).
Over on the scenic Brisbane Water, Gosford, Woy Woy, and Ettalong Beach are terrific spots for boating, fishing, and swimming. Similarly, attractions like the Australian Reptile Park and the Bouddi National Park are well worth checking out, especially if you love wildlife and nature.
But it is also home to a number of charming seaside towns like Avoca Beach, Killcare, and Terrigal, which you will instantly fall in love with. We recommend visiting Terrigal, especially as it’s home to a lovely beach and a decent-sized town with plenty of restaurants and Cafes. Our favorite coffee spot here is Legend Coffee on Pine Tree Lane. And for food, we love The Cowrie (it’s got epic ocean views).
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: The drive is around an hour and 20 minutes or you could hop on the train from Central Station to Gosford and from there grab a bus to one of the cute towns. For example, the 67, 68, 17 and 18 buses go to Terrigal.
Wollongong

Situated just an hour and 10 minutes south of Sydney, Wollongong is a vibrant city that is known for its stunning coastal setting and industrial heritage. Two of its main attractions are the iconic Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse and the scenic Grand Pacific Drive, which are the first ports of call for most visitors.
The Illawarra Escarpment is the perfect place to go bushwalking, and if you’re feeling brave, you can go hang gliding from Bald Hill here. While North Wollongong Beach is perfect for swimming and surfing. Also, the Wollongong Botanic Garden is well worth checking out, whilst the city also boasts a diverse dining scene – the seafood restaurants here are particularly awesome.
And for a unique experience, head to the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere!
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: The drive is an easy one, just an hour and 20 minutes along the M1. Or you can get a train from Central Station to Wollongong Station, which will take around 90 minutes.
Palm Beach

Home of iconic Aussie TV show ‘Home & Away’ – Palm Beach (aka Summer Bay – that’s what it’s called in the series) is an absolute must-visit. Even though I’m Irish, I grew up watching Home & Away (yup, every day after school it was a ritual), and I can still recite the opening lyrics – “closer each day, home and away.”
You can snap some photos outside the ‘Surfclub’ – which is near the entrance to the beach, and also at Alf’s Bait Shop & The Diner, which is The Boathouse Restaurant across the road from the beach.
Besides being the setting for one of my favorite TV shows, Palm Beach offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Pittwater. Known for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, it’s the perfect spot for a swim (swim only between the flags) or some surfing, if you’re into that sort of thing. You could also hike up to the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse, which offers panoramic views.
Palm Beach is also renowned for its charming local cafes and restaurants, but keep in mind you may not spot Alf Stewart roaming around, as most of the filming is done at the Australian Technology Park studios back in Sydney.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: It’s just under an hour’s (scenic) drive from Sydney via the stunning Northern Beaches. If you need to get public transport keep in mind you will need to take two buses. The first is the B1 bus from Wynyard Station to Warriewood and the second is the 199 from Warriewood to Palm Beach.
Manly

This one is a super-popular day trip from Sydney because it’s very close to the city and you don’t need a car to get here.
Yep, you can catch the ferry to Manly from Circular Quay (where the Opera House is located), and to me, it’s a must-do as it’s regarded as one of the most picturesque ferry journeys in the world. It passes the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and several of Sydney’s beaches. The fast ferry ride is only 20 minutes long, and the regular ferry is 40 minutes long.
I just love Manly Beach, it’s like Bondi but for locals. What I mean by that is that Manly is like Bondi, a golden sand surf haven, but it doesn’t attract the same crowds as Bondi. Which is a good thing.

I recommend having a bite to eat at The Pantry Manly, which is known for its fresh fish dishes. After lunch, walk to Shelly Beach – it’s a scenic 15-minute stroll from Manly Beach, and if you fancy going for a swim, I recommend doing so here as the water here is much calmer than in Manly. Shelly Beach is one of my favorite beaches in Sydney; in fact, it’s more of a cove with bright blue water. I actually celebrated two of my birthdays here at Shelly Beach – a picnic with friends and some wine. Bliss!
If, like me, you love a good cup of coffee, then swing by Showbox Coffee on Whistler St, to me, it’s the best coffee in Manly.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: Catch the ferry from Circular Quay direct to Manly, no need to have a car as the ferry ride is so scenic.
Port Stephens

If you are a beach lover, you will be spoilt for choice in Port Stephens. Because in this drop-dead-gorgeous coastal region, just over two hours north of Sydney, you can explore no less than 26 outstanding sandy beaches. Including the iconic Zenith Beach and the expansive Stockton Beach.
The region is also famous for its resident bottlenose dolphins, which are best seen on dolphin-watching cruises that skirt the picturesque bay. And if you want to stretch your legs, you should head over to Tomaree National Park, where a hike up to the Tomaree Head Summit reveals fantastic panoramic views of the area.

Another popular thing to do here is to go sandboarding on the towering dunes of Stockton Beach. It’s so fun!
In addition to its natural attractions, there are a few charming seaside towns that you should definitely spend a couple of hours in, like Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay, where you can enjoy fresh seafood, vibrant markets, and take in the relaxed coastal lifestyle. I remember thinking to myself when we last visited that I could easily live here.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: You really will need a car to get here for a day trip, it’s a two-hour drive. Public transport-wise, you can get a train from Central Station to Broadmeadow and from there catch a cab to Port Stephens – all in that will take around 2.5 hours.
Bowral

Located in the Southern Highlands, a super-picturesque region just 90 minutes southwest of Sydney. The area surrounding Bowral is characterised by rolling hills, lush countryside, and heritage villages. Its cooler climate creates some jaw-dropping landscapes, and the area also boasts well-manicured gardens, wineries, and historic estates.
Bowral is the largest town here, and it’s famous for its tulip festival (held at Corbett Gardens) and for being the hometown of Sir Donald Bradman. Cricket lovers will enjoy the museum that is dedicated to his life and the game he loved.
During your visit here, you can also check out the area’s fascinating collection of art galleries and antique shops, and stop off at the scenic Fitzroy Falls.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: It’s an hour and 20-minute drive, or you could catch the train from Central Station to Bowral (which will take just over 1.5 hours).
Royal National Park

It’s one of the oldest national parks in the world, and it’s packed with amazing views and diverse ecosystems.
Around an hour’s drive from Sydney, the park boasts an array of landscapes, including lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and serene waterways. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy a myriad of activities such as hiking along the renowned Coast Track, birdwatching, or picnicking amidst the tranquil surroundings. The park is also home to an array of wildlife, making it an ideal spot for photography and nature observation.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: It’s around a 45-minute drive, or you could book an awesome guided tour like this one. It includes a picnic at Wattamolla Beach and a hike to the iconic Wedding Cake Rock. It costs $350 AUD per person. The public transport options aren’t great, as it involves changes or a lengthy walk.
Kuring-Gai Chase National Park

Offering a unique blend of lush bushland, rugged sandstone landscapes, and serene waterways. This national park, around a 30-minute drive from Sydney, spans over 14,977 hectares and is rich in cultural heritage – it houses numerous Aboriginal sites such as rock engravings and cave art, which provide insight into the area’s Indigenous history.
You can take in breathtaking views from lookouts like West Head, which offers panoramic vistas over Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River.
🚗 Getting here from Sydney: It’s just over a 30-minute drive from Sydney to the park’s entrance, or book a full-day guided tour like this one, which costs around $295 AUD and includes a picnic and stops at other scenic spots.
