Cartagena in SPAIN – sorry I had to capitalize it as this piece is not about the more famous Cartagena in Colombia! Anyway, we fell in love with Cartagena, Spain – a port city with a large naval influence and a very impressive history.

Located in the province of Murcia, and around a 90-minute drive from Alicante, it has recently become a major cruise ship destination (and so its popularity is predicted to surge!) But besides being a popular cruise ship spot, it’s still a relatively hidden gem as a tourist destination.

We have visited the city a couple of times over the years as my family has a home in nearby Alicante. And the first time we visited, we were surprised by what a great, underrated city it is – and that’s why we kept returning.

Cartagena is a very easy city to navigate. Everything is within walking distance. And even at the height of the summer school holidays (which is when we last visited), we found its streets to be relatively crowd-free. We ticked off lots of activities in Cartagena that kept us busy for a couple of days! And below, I’ve listed my favorites.

The Top Things to Do in Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena is a city that boasts an intriguing blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its rich tapestry of ancient ruins, stunning architecture, and vibrant local customs, Cartagena offers both relaxation and adventure. And here’s my guide to some of the best things to do in this captivating city.

1. Roman Theatre

Step back in time and get a history lesson on your audio guide whilst you walk around this interesting Roman structure. The Roman Theatre is smack-bang in the middle of Cartagena city.

Built between 5 and 1 BC, the Roman Theatre in Cartagena was actually only uncovered in 1988 by local construction workers. And in 2008, they opened the museum across the street.

It’s without a doubt one of Spain’s most impressive archaeological sites and has been meticulously restored. The theatre has a seating capacity of 6,000, and it offers a glimpse into ancient Roman entertainment.

You can pay for an audio guide and stroll around the ruins. Entrance is priced at €7 and that includes entry to the museum too. Which I think is excellent value.

Or you can book this ticket which gives you access to 4 of Cartagena’s top sights, including the Roman Theatre, the Panoramic Lift, and Concepcion Castle. It costs just €21.

2. Museo del Teatro Romano

As I said, adjacent to the Roman Theatre is the Museo del Teatro Romano, which provides an immersive experience into the history and significance of the site. Here, visitors can explore artifacts, detailed exhibits, and multimedia presentations that enrich the understanding of Roman life in Cartagena.

There is excellent air-conditioning inside the museum. However, outside amongst the ruins, it can get very hot.

3. Palacio Consistorial

Certainly one of the most beautiful buildings in Cartagena. The Palacio Consistorial is influenced by French design. Built between 1900 and 1907, it is located within the main town hall square. The interior is more modern than the early 20th-century styled exterior. You can get an English guide upon entry to give you a tour of the interior. A short walk around the interior will give an interesting insight into the history of the Palacio. As well as its current-day use.

4. Spanish Civil War Museum (Refugio Museo de la Guerra Civil)

The Spanish Civil War started in 1936 when a sector of the army attempted a military coup. The city of Cartagena remained loyal to the Spanish government. And so the city quickly became a Republican stronghold.

Cartagena was targeted frequently during the civil war. In fact, it was targeted so many times it eventually forced the people of Cartagena underground for shelter. The Spanish Civil War Museum, located on Calle Gisbert, was one of the largest shelters in Cartagena and once held 5,500 residents. The Spanish Civil War Museum gives a harrowing insight into life for these residents during the Civil War.

The Civil War Refuge & Museum can be accessed via a Panoramic lift on Calle Gisbert. The entrance fee is just €3.50. It’s also included in this pass that I mentioned above.

5. Wander the historic streets

Begin your journey in Cartagena by exploring its historical heart. The city is steeped in history, dating back to its founding by the Carthaginians over 2,000 years ago.

As you wander through the city, take time to appreciate the stunning architecture that adorns Cartagena’s streets. The Art Nouveau and Modernist buildings, such as the Grand Hotel and the Casa Cervantes, reflect the city’s prosperous past. The vibrant facades and intricate details of these structures make for a delightful architectural tour.

Cartagena is not only about history and architecture; it also offers a taste of authentic Spanish culture. The bustling Mercado de Santa Florentina is a perfect place to immerse yourself in local life. Here, you can sample a variety of fresh produce, seafood, and traditional Spanish delicacies. Try the local favorite, Caldero, a rice dish cooked with fish broth, or savor tapas at one of the many stalls.

To end your day, stroll along the lively Calle Mayor. This main thoroughfare is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants offering everything from local crafts to gourmet cuisine.

6. Concepcion Castle

Another historical gem is the Concepción Castle, perched atop a hill offering panoramic views of the city and its harbor. The castle, originally constructed by the Moors and later fortified by the Spanish, now houses the History and Archaeology Museum of Cartagena. The hike up to the castle is rewarded with breathtaking vistas and a deeper appreciation for Cartagena’s strategic importance over the centuries.

You can buy this ticket which gives you access to 4 of Cartagena’s top sights, including the Roman Theatre, the Panoramic Lift, and Concepcion Castle. It costs just €21.

7. Naval Museum of Cartagena

For those who appreciate more recent history, the Naval Museum of Cartagena is a fascinating stop. As a major naval base, the city’s maritime heritage is well-documented here, with exhibits ranging from ship models to naval uniforms, illustrating Cartagena’s longstanding role as a port city.

It’s free to enter, although a voluntary contribution of a couple of euros is recommended.

8. Have a beach day!

There are plenty of picturesque beaches that line the city’s coast. Cala Cortina, a short drive from the city center, is one of our favorites. This tranquil beach with crystal-clear waters is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. And the surrounding cliffs and coves provide a scenic backdrop.

9. Parque Regional de Calblanque

Nearby Parque Regional de Calblanque is known for its pristine landscapes and biodiversity. Hiking trails wind through dunes, salt flats, and rugged mountains, offering opportunities for birdwatching and photography. The park’s unspoiled beaches are perfect if you’re looking for both solitude and natural beauty.

10. Check out a fun event in the city

One of Cartagena’s unique cultural experiences is the annual Semana Santa, or Holy Week, which is celebrated with elaborate processions and fervent devotion. The city comes alive with color and emotion as locals and tourists join in the festivities. The intricate floats, traditional costumes, and haunting music create a memorable spectacle that highlights the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Cartagena is such an underrated city!

Here’s a list of the best hotels in Cartagena! We really like the AC Hotel by Marriott Cartagena. It’s stylish and has a great location close to the Roman Theatre, museums, etc.

But some other good options include the NH Campo Cartagena, which is conveniently located in the heart of the city and is a large, modern hotel that’s close to the Roman Theatre. Alternatively, Hotel Los Habaneros is a fantastic option for budget-conscious travelers, offering comfortable accommodations and friendly service.

📌 Cartagena fast facts:

  • Where to stay: We stayed at the AC Hotel by Marriott Cartagena. It’s stylish and has a great location close to the Roman Theatre, museums, etc.
  • How long: We advise spending at least 2 days in Cartagena.
  • Currency: Euros (EUR).
  • Airport: Murcia Airport, officially known as Región de Murcia International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia), is the closest airport. It’s about 30 kilometers away. There’s also a larger airport in Alicante, around an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away.
  • Best month to visit: I would say May or September are good times to visit, when the summer crowds have gone, and the temperatures are still comfortably warm.
  • What to pack: The plug type used in Spain is Type C and Type F. And I wore my Teva Hurricane Sandals most of the time here; they are so comfortable and have sturdy soles. And I lived in my Sweaty Betty modal wide leg pants here.
