Visiting Juzcar, Spain (Spain’s Smurf Village)

Enchanting Juzcar (aka the Smurf Village) is located in the scenic Valle del Genal in the Serrania de Ronda, around an hour and 45 minutes’ drive from Malaga. And just 25 km from Ronda, so like us, many tourists combine the two on a day trip from Malaga.

This small mountain village is known for a unique feature: the village’s houses and buildings are painted a gorgeous shade of blue. Why? Well, in 2011, Sony Pictures decided to paint the town blue as a promotional event for “The Smurfs 3D” movie. Although it was initially a temporary measure, the locals decided to keep it blue due to a significant increase in tourism.

We visited on a rainy evening in January, and most of the restaurants and hotels were closed. But, we still had a lovely few hours here, wandering the streets in search of the many Smurfs characters that are painted on the buildings. I would imagine it can get pretty busy here in peak tourist season (June to September), and I’m sure that the blue buildings would really pop on a sunny day.

Where is Juzcar?

As I said, Juzcar is nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of the Serranía de Ronda in Andalusia, and it’s around an hour and 45 minutes’ drive from Malaga and 25 km from Ronda. There aren’t many public transport options to get here – but, depending on where you’re staying, you could get a bus or train as far as Ronda and then get a taxi from there.

In my opinion, you really need to have a rental car to get here. And keep in mind the drive into Juzcar is narrow and winding, and can be tough to drive on a rainy or cloudy day. My husband definitely didn’t enjoy the drive, but it was a miserable January afternoon when we visited.

Why visit Juzcar?

Because it offers an enchanting escape into a world that seems plucked straight from a storybook, known as the “Blue Smurf Village,” Juzcar is super-unique with its vibrant blue hues and stunning natural landscapes that surround it.

And why is it painted blue?

The story of Juzcar’s transformation into the Blue Village began in 2011, when Sony Pictures selected it as the promotional site for the release of “The Smurfs” movie. The entire village was painted a bright blue. And while the original plan was to revert the buildings to their traditional white, the villagers chose to embrace their new identity due to the influx of tourism it brought.

However, due to a copyright dispute, the village has not been an official Smurf-themed location since 2017. And the official statues and licensed merchandise were taken down then, but you can still find some street murals, graffiti, and unofficial references.

What can I do in Juzcar?

1. Wander around the village (and take lots of photos)

Upon arriving in Juzcar, you’ll be greeted by a sea of azure facades that create a surreal and magical atmosphere. The village’s iconic blue buildings are complemented by the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, making for a striking contrast. As you wander through the narrow cobbled streets, you’ll find that each corner reveals something new and delightful, from Smurf-themed murals to quirky sculptures and charming cafes.

The quaint children’s park on the outskirts of town is a fantastic starting point for your stroll around the village (and we actually parked our rental car near here!) Also, be sure to explore Calle Sol and Calle Fuente Caraila as well, where you’ll find stunning artwork adorning the vibrant blue walls.

2. Go on a hike

There are plenty of awesome hikes to explore in the surrounding Serranía de Ronda. Hiking trails crisscross the region, offering breathtaking views of the dramatic landscapes. The trails cater to all levels of experience, from leisurely walks to more challenging hikes.

One of the top trails is the Caminito del Rey, famously known for its dramatic pathways clinging to the steep walls of a narrow gorge. This thrilling hike provides stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and the Guadalhorce River below. Another popular route is the Llanos de Líbar, which takes you through lush valleys and limestone formations.

3. Eat out!

In Juzcar, the local cuisine is a highlight not to be missed. Andalusian dishes, characterized by their rich flavors and fresh ingredients, are served with pride in the village’s eateries. And although it’s a small village – there are a couple of restaurants here, namely Restaurante La Bodega de Bandolero, Bar ParribaPabajo, and Bar el Casaron.

4. Combine your visit here with a visit to nearby Ronda

While you’re in the area, the nearby town of Ronda is a must-visit. Known for its dramatic cliffs and historic architecture, Ronda is a short 25-minute but winding drive away. The iconic Puente Nuevo bridge here, spanning the deep El Tajo gorge, provides stunning views and is a testament to the engineering marvels of the past. And Ronda’s old town is a delightful labyrinth of narrow streets, filled with historic sites, quaint shops, and cozy cafes.

And the Plaza de Toros, one of Spain’s oldest bullrings is also located here.

Can I spend the night in Juzcar?

Yes, you can; however, your options are limited as it is a small local village.

The Hotel Bandolero is a popular choice here. It’s known for its rustic charm and personalized service. This boutique hotel features comfortable rooms and a restaurant offering traditional Spanish cuisine. Another option is to rent an apartment as you will have more space, and this one has access to a shared outdoor pool.

About renting a car in Spain:

We loved driving in Spain!

I’ll be honest, the easiest way to get to Juzcar is with a rental car – we always use Discover Cars when we want to rent a car because you can search by ‘cheapest car rental rates’ and ‘most popular car rental deals’ – it’s so easy to use!

The most important thing you will need if renting a vehicle in Spain is a valid driver’s license. No company will allow you to do so without one.

And if you are traveling from a country outside the European Union, you might want to get an international driver’s license to make the rental process easier. Although many rental companies accept foreign driver’s licenses without it.

Drivers typically need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Spain, though some companies might require a minimum age of 25. Young drivers under 25 may incur a surcharge.

Each company has different terms and conditions, so you should be fully aware of them. Additionally, you will also need a valid credit card in your name. Rental companies will want to keep a credit card on file as a holding deposit.

If you have a debit card, you will be charged a holding fee. Please note that some companies do not accept a debit card.

Also, because renting a car in Spain is incredibly popular, you WILL NEED to book your rental car in advance. Our rental car company told us they sell out over the busy tourist season (which is from April to September).
