In search of the perfect spot for a romantic escape? Then why not consider the misty mountains of Northern Thailand, most specifically the city of Chiang Mai, often referred to as the Rose of the North?

This gorgeous city provides a rich combination of traditional Lanna culture, modern luxury, and peaceful landscapes. For a married couple, like us, that matters. Because for us, a good weekend away isn’t just about ticking off landmarks, it’s about embracing the culture and taking in the stunning scenery. And of course, having a variety of luxury hotels and great places to eat helps too.

So, let’s take a look at a few of our favorite things to do in Chiang Mai as a couple.

Wat Chedi Luang temple

A Buddhist temple that’s well worth a visit here is Wat Chedi Luang in the heart of Chiang Mai. Its name translates to “Temple of the Great Stupa,” and it has a rich history dating back to the 14th century.

It was originally constructed to house the ashes of King Saen Muang Ma’s father, and one of its most notable features was its massive chedi, which once stood over 80 meters tall before being partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century. It was also once home to the revered Emerald Buddha, now housed in Bangkok at Wat Phra Kaew.

Wat Phra Singh

Also located in the heart of Chiang Mai, this temple was established in the 14th century. It is a remarkable example of Lanna architectural style, characterized by its intricate wood carvings and stunning pagodas. The temple is home to the revered Phra Singh Buddha image.

Interestingly, Wat Phra Singh plays a significant role during the Songkran festival, where the image is paraded through the streets to bring blessings to the locals.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

No trip to Chiang Mai could be considered complete without visiting the spiritual center of the city. For us, the chance to see the golden spires of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was not only a chance to take lots of photos, but it was also a chance to feel peace and a connection to Buddhism.

Located on a mountain, this temple is best visited at sunrise. As you’ll get to witness the mist rising from the valley below. And at this early hour, you’ll also hear the sound of the monks’ chanting. It gave us an overwhelming sense of peace being here before anyone else was awake.

Wat Pha Lat

If you’re after something a little more secluded, the hidden jungle temple of Wat Pha Lat is a good call. This hidden gem can be found along the Monk’s Trail in the lush forests of Doi Suthep Mountain.

And as I said, unlike its more famous neighbor, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Pha Lat offers a tranquil and contemplative experience. It’s often referred to as the “hidden temple,” and when you reach it, you’ll find beautiful stone carvings that fit right into the jungle environment, serene waterfalls, and a series of meditation spots overlooking the city below.

Go hiking

Hiking is popular in this region!

Outside the city, you’ll find the rolling hills of Northern Thailand, and they are the perfect spot to hike up to take in the view from the viewpoint/ summit.

  • One of the most popular hikes here is the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park trail, which leads to the iconic Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple mentioned above. This moderate trek offers panoramic views of Chiang Mai city.
  • If you’re keen for a more challenging hike, the trail to Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak, is a good option. On the hike, you can explore diverse ecosystems and stunning waterfalls.
  • Another must-visit is the Mae Sa Waterfall trail, which is relatively easy and perfect for families, as it meanders through beautiful forests and is home to a few swimming spots.
  • Finally, the Monk’s Trail is a serene path that leads to Wat Pha Lat (also mentioned above), providing a peaceful escape from the bustling city.

Play a round of golf

For the sports-loving couple, the region offers top-notch facilities to suit all levels of interest and proficiency. Discovering the best golf courses Chiang Mai has to offer is a great way to spend a day together, with courses like the Alpine Golf Resort or Chiang Mai Highlands offering picturesque emerald greens against the stunning backdrop of the mountains.

Even if you’re not a golfer, the Sanuk (joyful) spirit of Thai golf courses, complete with the assistance of caddies and the view from the clubhouse, makes for a fun date experience.

Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden

For a different pace of nature, the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden in Mae Rim is a must-visit. The canopy walkway lets you stroll hand in hand above the treetop level, and the glasshouse complex has exotic orchids and tropical plants that look like they belong in a fairytale.

Eat your way around the city

Food is the universal language of love, and the culinary scene in Chiang Mai is a colorful playground for the senses. You could do a cooking class here, like friends of ours did, where they learned the secrets of Northern Thai cuisine. You’ll shop for fresh galangal and lemongrass at a local market before learning the art of pounding your own Khao Soi curry paste.

In the evening, the Ping River is the place to be for couples. A dinner cruise on a traditional teak wood boat is a classic experience in Chiang Mai. Sailing past the riverside restaurants and ancient bridges while enjoying a multi-course meal of traditional Thai cuisine is arguably the most romantic way to spend an evening in Chiang Mai.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, the Jing Jai Market is a great place to experience organic snacks and coffee, and get a glimpse of the slower pace of life in Chiang Mai.

Elephant Nature Park

Chiang Mai is also famous worldwide for its ethical elephant parks, including the Elephant Nature Park. Visiting the park for a day of observing these beautiful creatures in their natural environment, rather than watching them perform in outdated shows or riding them, is a poignant experience for couples.

You can feed the elephants on this tour, which is a half-day tour and costs around $26 USD per person.

Have a spa day

A visit to one of the many luxury spas in the city is a must for a day spent trekking or sightseeing. A traditional Lanna massage, involving warm herbal packs and ancient stretching techniques, is sure to ease away any fatigue.

There are many luxury resorts in the Nimman or Old City areas of the city, many of which have dedicated couples’ suites complete with oversized jasmine baths, making sure your day ends in total relaxation. Hotel Sensai Nimman Chiang Mai is a top recommendation of ours.

Thanks for Reading!

This city is one of our favorite couples’ vacation spots in Asia because it doesn’t follow a one-size-fits-all approach. By that I mean there’s something for every travel style here. Whether sharing a laugh on the golf course, exploring a night market, or gazing at the sunset from a mountain top, the beauty of Chiang Mai is that every moment feels unique.

By combining culture with modern conveniences, a visit to this hidden gem in northern Thailand is sure to be a memorable one.
