You’ve clicked here because you’re wondering which is the best European city for food. And I’m sure that iconic foodie destinations like Rome and Madrid immediately come to mind when you think of great foodie destinations. But, actually, as a couple who’ve traveled extensively – we had our favorite meals in the more off-the-beaten-path cities like Alicante and Florence.

Now I will say, that the best foodie city for you will be different from the best one for your friend or spouse. It all depends on what food you like or want.

Yup, my husband and I love traveling and good food – I mean who doesn’t? And, we’ve put together this list of the best European cities for food, based on our experiences. So, whether you’re seeking authentic family-run tavernas or Michelin-starred restaurants, this guide will take you through the very best cities to visit in Europe for top-quality cuisine.

Now, get your forks at the ready, and let’s dig in!

What is the best European city for food?

When it comes to awesome food, we reckon, Europe is head and shoulders above other continents, and it’s definitely a must-visit for food lovers. We particularly loved the food and restaurant scene in Athens and Istanbul.

Top foodie travel tip: Always try to abide by the rule ‘eat where the locals eat’, and NOT at restaurants close to big tourist sites. These restaurants tend to not care so much about quality as in most cases, their customers won’t be returning. Another top tip is to avoid restaurants that have a menu in multiple languages. This is a clear sign that they cater to tourists and not locals.

Florence, Italy

  • Best restaurants in Florence: La Tenda Rossa on Piazza del Signoria & Trattoria Dall’Oste on Borgo S. Lorenzo
  • Must-try dishes in Florence: Pappardelle al cinghiale and bistecca

We can’t talk about the best European city for food without mentioning Italy. From pasta to pizza and creamy gelato. Italian cuisine is loved across the world for its blend of fresh Mediterranean ingredients and indulgent flavors. And even though, Florence, the 8th biggest city in Italy, may be renowned for its art (the Statue of David can be found here). But, it’s also well-known for its steak, truffles, and wines, making it one of the best cities to visit for foodies

Florence is brimming with traditional trattorias that serve authentic recipes passed down through generations. Rich pasta dishes are especially popular here, like pappardelle al cinghiale, which features ragu made from wild boar. Another famous dish here is bistecca alla Fiorentina, a thick-cut grilled T-bone steak that melts in the mouth.

If you’re more of a street food guy or gal then luckily for you the sandwich joints in Florence are out-of-this-world. Our favorites include Pugi and Schiacciamatta.

While you’re in Florence, take a full day to wander through the city exploring its Renaissance history. Be sure to do a tour of the Uffizi Gallery or Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (aka Il Duomo). And along the way stop by cafes and gelaterias for sweet treats. It will make for a truly memorable day in Florence.

Coffee culture in Florence:

As you know, coffee culture is huge in Italy (it’s where the espresso was invented), and Florence boasts many independent coffee shops selling the finest roasts that can be enjoyed with sweet cantucci cookies. One of our favorite cafes in Florence is Ala Grande Caffè on Via S. Gallo. And Coffee Mantra on Via della Mattonaia is also very popular!

Alicante, Spain

  • Best restaurants in Alicante: La Ereta Restaurant next La Ereta Park & Las Brasas de San Miguel on Calle de San Jose
  • Must-try foods in Alicante: Saffron-infused paella and patatas bravas

Whilst many of us may think of Barcelona, Madrid, or Seville as the food capitals of Spain, Alicante is a quiet contender with some of the very best cuisine in the country. Alicante is situated in Costa Blanca in eastern Spain and is known for its use of rich flavors like saffron, paprika, and smooth olive oil grown in nearby groves.

Paella is one of Spain’s most famous dishes, and the signature dish of Alicante is a saffron-infused paella. This iconic dish is usually made with seafood, rabbit, or snails, mixed with a rich tomato sauce, and served in an impressively large pan.

Tapas is another popular style of dish in Alicante and across Spain. These small plates are often eaten as a complement to drinks, ranging from olives and cheese to potato omelets and the iconic patatas bravas. Thanks to Alicante’s proximity to the sea, many tapas bars here offer delicious fresh seafood to accompany a cocktail or glass of wine.

One of the best restaurants in Alicante is located next to La Ereta Park – La Ereta Restaurant which offers a fine dining experience paired with some incredible views of the city below. They specialize in Mediterranean cuisine and only use seasonal local produce. As you can imagine, it’s very popular so advance booking is essential!

If you’re after a sweet treat, you won’t have to search far in Alicante. Turrón is a delightful almond nougat that is especially popular around the holidays.

Where to stay in Alicante:

There are some amazing villas in Spain, especially in the Costa Blanca region. These spacious properties are nestled in the mountains or by the beachfront, offering plush interior designs, private pools, and stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline for an indulgent stay. After a day of indulging in fine foods, retiring to a relaxing villa is the perfect way to unwind (and digest!)

Greek cuisine has captured the hearts – and stomachs – of many foodies thanks to its irresistible combination of fresh vegetables, herbs, and cheeses. And what better place to sample its authentic recipes than in its capital city? Athens is an ancient city dotted with traditional tavernas, instantly recognizable thanks to their vibrant atmospheres, live music, and mouthwatering menus.

We spent four days in Athens recently, during our month tour of Greece and its islands and we were so impressed by the food here.

There are many iconic dishes that you should try in Athens. From grilled souvlaki dipped in tzatziki to stuffed gyros with fried potatoes and moussaka topped with creamy sauce. And let’s not forget about the classic Greek salads with tangy feta cheese!

Each dish we tried in Athens is packed with flavor.

In the street food markets in Athens (like Varvakios Agora), be sure to try out grilled calamari. Or if you’ve got a sweet tooth, loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts) will leave your mouth watering! If you prefer something a little more upscale, head to Ermou Street connecting Syntagma Square to Monastiraki to find rooftop bars and elegant restaurants with 5-star service, food (and prices!)

If you want to experience the very best that Athens has to offer, explore the range of fantastic Greece tours on offer. A travel expert can curate your itinerary, making it especially personalized for your tastes, and offer guided tours of Greece’s most iconic sites, like the Acropolis.

Istanbul, Turkey

  • Best restaurants in Istanbul: Hanzade Terrace Restaurant in Emin Sinan & Mivan Restaurant also in Emin Sinan
  • Must-try dishes in Istanbul: kebabs, köfte, lahmacun, locum (Turkish Delight)

Similar to Greece, Turkey is known for its flavorful cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Straddling both Europe and Asia, the country blends a variety of influences from the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, which makes its cuisine incredibly diverse. Istanbul is the capital city, and it’s home to the best restaurants in the country. Would you believe there are a whopping 50,000 restaurants in Istanbul?

Meze platters are common in Istanbul – these are a kaleidoscope of color, texture, and flavor, featuring dips like hummus, haydari and ezme. And they are typically served with pita, falafel, or stuffed vine leaves, mezes. They are a very social dish and are meant to be shared with friends and family.

Other famous regional dishes include kebabs, köfte, and lahmacun (Turkish pizzas), which can be enjoyed in traditional lokantas, buffet-style eateries that can be found across Istanbul. FYI, two of our favorite restaurants in Istanbul are located on the lower level of the famed Galata Bridge –  Galata Sanat Restaurant and Beyaz Inci Restaurant.

We also loved Summit Bar and Terrace in Beşiktaş Square, which not only has great food but also one of the best rooftop terraces in the whole city

When in Istanbul, be sure to follow your dinner with a Turkish delight, locally known as lokum. Or a sticky baklava with a strong, unfiltered coffee in a cezve pot for an authentic experience.

San Sebastian, Spain

  • Best restaurants in San Sebastian: Arzak on Alcalde J. Elosegi Hiribidea & La Madame on San Bartolome Kalea
  • Must-try dishes in San Sebastian: Pintxos, grilled hake cheeks

San Sebastián, a cool coastal spot in Spain’s Basque Country, is famous for its buzzing food scene. The city is a foodie paradise, packed with Michelin-starred restaurants that draw in food lovers from all over. One of the most famous here is Amelia by Paulo Airaudo – which has two Michelin stars!

But the real stars of San Sebastián’s food scene are the pintxos – those tasty little bites you find piled on slices of bread in the lively bars of the Old Town (Parte Vieja). These pintxos bars (we loved Borda Berri) serve up a mouthwatering mix of flavors, from classic Basque ingredients to creative new dishes.

And let’s not forget the seafood! San Sebastián is all about the freshest catches from the Cantabrian Sea, which you’ll see on menus everywhere. The city also loves to celebrate its food culture with festivals and markets where both locals and visitors can try the best Basque treats. San Sebastián Gastronomika is held annually in early October – and it’s considered one of the best foodie festivals in Europe.
