How to Spend 24 hours in Athens

Walking through ancient Athens is like being in the pages of a history book. There is so much to do in Athens that you will never see it all unless you’re here for a long time.

We stayed very close to the Acropolis, and we highly recommend staying near the Acropolis or Monastiraki Metro stations if you’re just here for 24 hours. Athens is a big city, and you don’t want to be too far out from all the major sights.

Athens can feel more intense than some expect, but that energy is part of what makes it memorable. Thus, we recommend NOT going in July and August as the crowds are at their biggest and the weather is at its hottest. It was 40°C when we were there.

Best things to do with 24 hours in Athens

Ah, Athens! The cradle of Western civilization where ancient ruins whisper stories of times long past, and modern life hums with vibrancy and zest. If you find yourself with just 24 hours in this enchanting city, don’t fret! Here’s how to squeeze in the best of Athens in a delightful, whirlwind day.

FYI, you can purchase a Multi Ticket, which gives you access to most of the ancient sights (including the Acropolis) for about €43.

Morning – Acropolis

The Acropolis is an absolute must-see, and heading to it early in the morning helps avoid the strongest heat and busiest crowds. My tip is to try to get here when the gates open at 8 am. The Parthenon and the Erechtheion were two more of our favorite attractions we saw during our time here.

So, after an early breakfast, we recommend making your way to the iconic Acropolis. As you ascend the rocky hill to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, imagine the ancient Greeks trudging up to the Parthenon, debating philosophy and politics. The panoramic views of Athens from the top are breathtaking. And don’t forget to explore the other ancient structures like the Erechtheion (as I said, it’s one of my favorite structures up here) and the Temple of Athena Nike.

This guided tour of the Acropolis is my recommendation if you’re keen to have a guide on hand to show you around and answer your questions. This small group tour is personalized and gets you a skip-the-line ticket so you don’t need to queue in the hot sun. This experience is up to 4 hours in duration.

Afterward, head on down to the Acropolis Museum on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street to explore original sculptures and artifacts from the Acropolis – doing so will help to put the history of what you’ve witnessed at the Acropolis into perspective.

Early Afternoon – Walk through some local neighborhoods

Once you’ve soaked in enough history, wander down to the charming neighborhood of Plaka. Known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods,” Plaka is a labyrinth of narrow streets, lined with neoclassical architecture, quaint shops, and cozy tavernas. Here, you can indulge in some shopping, picking up handmade souvenirs or unique pieces of Greek jewelry.

Another hidden gem we discovered while here includes the whitewashed houses of Anafiotika, which climb the hillside, giving a glimpse of the islands close to the city.

Afternoon – National Archaeological Museum & The Ancient Agora

Post-lunch, make your way to the National Archaeological Museum, one of the world’s most important museums dedicated to ancient Greek art. Here, marvel at the exquisite sculptures, pottery, and artifacts that date back to the prehistoric era.

As one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece, the Ancient Agora should be your next visit. Once a bustling center of political, commercial, and social activity. In fact, it is where Socrates once walked and where democracy was born.

This site offers a fascinating array of ruins to explore, including the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus, the Stoa of Attalos, which now houses a museum, and the remains of various public buildings and statues.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus should be your next stop this afternoon. Constructed over several centuries, this grandiose temple was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, and once boasted 104 colossal columns, of which 15 still stand today.

Visiting this site offers a unique opportunity to walk amidst the remnants of a structure that was once the largest temple in Greece, allowing you to appreciate the sheer scale and ambition of its creators.

Watch the sunset

Athens is a sprawling city!

As the sun begins its descent, head to the Areopagus Hill or Philopappos Hill for a breathtaking view of the sunset over the city. The golden hues illuminating the Acropolis create a picture-perfect moment that will linger in your memory long after your visit.

The National Gardens of Athens is also a good spot for a stroll in the early evening (before it gets dark). Established in 1838 by Queen Amalia, the gardens span approximately 38 acres and are home to a diverse array of plant species from around the world, including palm trees, cypresses, and fragrant flowers.

Evening – Dinner o’clock

Each dish we tried in Athens is packed with flavor.

If you’re keen for a more casual dinner then venture to the street food markets in Athens (like Varvakios Agora). And be sure to try out grilled calamari. Or if you’ve got a sweet tooth, loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts) will leave your mouth watering!

If you prefer something a little more upscale, head to Ermou Street connecting Syntagma Square to Monastiraki to find rooftop bars and elegant restaurants with 5-star service, food (and prices!)

Our favorite restaurants in Athens were A Little Taste of Home on Astiggos 8 & Karamanlidika on Evripidou 52.

Where to Stay in Athens

We stayed at and highly recommend Adams Hotel, just a two-minute walk from Hadrian’s Arch. We were even luckier to be upgraded to a larger room with a huge terrace featuring an excellent view of the Acropolis.

The Athenian Riviera Hotel & Suites is also highly recommended, as well as the Four Seasons Palace Hotel if you’re after somewhere truly luxurious and romantic.
