San Francisco has an eclectic tapestry of experiences, each thread a burst of cultural vibrancy and innovative spirit. The city’s pulse is tangible as the gentle Pacific breeze weaves through bustling streets, marrying the urban heartbeat with myriad scents, sounds, and sights. Swathed in its signature mist, the city emerges as a canvas where each stroke represents a fusion of daring innovation and comforting tradition, bridging history with the rush of progress.

Embark on a guided exploration that cuts through the heart of this urban mosaic with a fascinating sightseeing tour. Be captivated by the architectural marvels arching skyward and the meandering paths of Chinatown, a sensory-rich district spiced with mystery and age-old stories. San Francisco invites you to a realm of endless possibilities. Each sightseeing adventure is a vignette, a vibrant thread woven into the fabric of the city’s grand narrative. As you drift through the lively corridors of commerce or ascend to cloud-kissing vantage points, each encounter is a crescendo in the city’s opulent overture.

So, no matter if you have two weeks or just 5 days in San Francisco – I’ve listed the absolute must-do activities for the Golden Gate City below …

1. Walk, cycle, or drive across the Golden Gate Bridge

Me posing in front of the Golden Gate Bridge!

Also known as San Francisco’s Crimson Wonder, the Golden Gate Bridge, with its towering presence and unmistakable crimson hue, is a spectacle that defines San Francisco. Venturing across this colossal structure, you’re greeted by a gust of maritime air and vistas that command your gaze. It’s more than a crossing; it’s a bold declaration of ambition and beauty, harmonizing with the rugged coastlines it spans.

Witnessing the bridge at the golden hour, you’re treated to a performance of light that transforms steel into fire as the sun kisses the Pacific. The experience is visceral, a blend of natural grandeur and human artistry that stirs a sense of boundless wonder within the heart of every onlooker.

I reckon the best way to see the ‘crimson wonder’ is by cycling across it! The bridge is 2.1 miles long and and it will take around 25 minutes to cycle across it. You can either cycle both ways or return by ferry from Sausalito and drop your bike back off at the rental store when you come off your ferry. You can rent a bike from Golden Gate Bridge Bike Rentals at 2157 Lombard St for as little as $29! They also rent electric bikes.

My Tour Suggestion: One of the most popular tours in San Francisco is this Golden Gate Cruise, which yep, you guessed right – gets you up close to the iconic landmark from the water! Offering the best viewpoint of the crimson bridge, in my opinion. The cruise is one-hour-long and costs $38 USD.

2. Explore Alcatraz Prison

Alcatraz on a moody San Francisco day!

The voyage to Alcatraz Island is etched with anticipation and the thrill of unraveling history. The waters of the bay lead you to a storied isle that has captured the imaginations of millions. The notorious prison, now silent, stands as a monument to tales of infamy and redemption, its walls whispering legends of the souls once confined within.

As you traverse the cell house and grounds, there’s an electric sensation of walking alongside shadows of the past. It’s an immersive narrative, a palpable connection to the chronicles of those who lived and dreamed of freedom beneath the watchful eye of the city.

My Tour Recommendation: It should come as no surprise that one of the most popular things to do in San Francisco is a guided cruise tour of Alcatraz! The tour of Alcatraz prison itself is via a self-guided audio tour, which is really informative. It’s so interesting to see the prison cells and hear the stories of former inmates. Included in your ticket, you can visit the historical gardens of Alcatraz which has stunning views of San Francisco Bay, and explore any exhibitions being hosted in the Industries Building. You’ll also get to enjoy a boat cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge as part of this experience. Allow around 5 hours for this well-rated tour, which costs from $148 USD.

3. Wander around Fisherman’s Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf buzzes with an energy that’s unmistakably San Franciscan. It’s a cultural concoction, serving up a feast for the senses where the ocean’s bounty meets a festival of flavors, colors, and people. The area is alive with the symphony of animals and the hustle of humanity, each adding a note to the Wharf’s captivating song.

Wander the piers, and you’re part of a scene that’s as eclectic as it is historic. Here, the taste of sumptuous crab bisque mingles with the laughter of families and the chatter of eclectic local artists, all set to the backdrop of the bay’s azure canvas. Fisherman’s Wharf truly is San Francisco’s melting pot of cultures!

If you’re a guided tour guy or gal, then this San Francisco City Tour will be right up your street. It’s one of the best-rated tours in San Francisco, and it includes visits to Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, and neighborhoods like Haight-Ashbury. You’ll really pack a whole lot in! It lasts for 4-5 hours and costs as little as $65 USD, which I say is great value!

4. See the zigzag wonder that is Lombard Street

See it does look like a serpent!

Lombard Street‘s winding turns offer a picturesque journey that enchants visitors. It’s often been described as looking like a serpent due to its winding nature. This floral-framed thoroughfare is an enchanting dance of color and motion, inviting travelers to meander its winding path. It’s an emblem of the city’s playful heart, a reminder that the most delightful paths are not straight but full of unexpected turns and charming vistas.

From the summit’s vantage, the city spreads out in a tapestry of rooftops and bay windows, a panorama that captures the essence of San Francisco’s eclectic spirit. Lombard Street is not merely a road; it’s a living gallery, an ode to the aesthetic pleasures that define this coastal metropolis.

My Tour Recommendation: This two-hour guided walking tour includes a tour of Lombard Street as well as off-the-beaten-track sights in downtown San Francisco. Tickets cost from $80 per adult.

5. Stop by The Painted Ladies

Perched elegantly along the lush green of Alamo Square, the charming Painted Ladies are a vibrant homage to San Francisco’s architectural panache. These iconic residences, cloaked in a kaleidoscope of colors, boast a Victorian grandeur that harks back to the days when elegance and detail reigned supreme. Each façade tells a story, whispering secrets of the city’s gilded past through stained glass windows and gingerbread trim.

Visiting these regal beauties offers a feast for the eyes and a step back into a time when artistry was cherished. As the afternoon sun plays upon their ornate balconies, the Painted Ladies bask in a glow that seems to transport the onlooker to an era of sophistication and splendor. They are not simply structures but the essence of San Francisco’s storied past, proudly paraded in a riot of color and historic charm.

Under a 30 minute walk from the iconic Painted Ladies is one of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco – the ‘Mrs Doubtfire House’, I’m a huge fan of the 1993 movie and Robin Williams. The house is located at 2640 Steiner Street, near Pacific Heights. It looks a little different from the movie, what you’d expect after almost 30 years, but it’s still a must-see for movie fans. In fact, the house was recently sold for $4.5 million.

6. Climb Twin Peaks

Ascending to the heights of Twin Peaks, one finds themselves at the pinnacle of urban serenity. Here, the city’s pulse fades into a hushed reverence, and the unfolding panorama is nothing short of spellbinding. The entire Bay Area is laid out like a grand living diorama, inviting onlookers to drink in the view that stretches to infinity.

The journey to this summit is as much a part of the experience as the view itself. Twisting through verdant streets, each turn elevates you until the grandeur of San Francisco lies beneath, a sprawling testament to nature’s artistry and human ambition.

My Tour Suggestion: For as little as $65 USD you can join this 3-4 hour tour that not only takes you to Twin Peaks but also to the super-unique Eureka Valley, Castro, Corona Heights, and Dolores Heights. Be prepared to hike to some seriously awesome viewpoints and learn a lot about these quirky areas from your knowledgeable local guide!

7. Keep your curiosity alive at the Exploratorium

If you’re visiting San Francisco with kids a visit to the Exploratorium is a must! At the Exploratorium, the mind’s eye is king. This is not merely a museum but San Francisco’s treasure chest of wonder and inquiry. Each exhibit is a portal to new dimensions of understanding, where the laws of physics, the mysteries of nature, and the frontiers of human perception are not just observed but experienced.

Curiosity is the currency, and every display and interactive marvel encourages a childlike wonder that transcends age. The Exploratorium embodies the city’s spirit of innovation and play, inviting all who enter to discover, explore, and marvel.

You can buy your Exploratorium tickets for $39.95 here!
