Our guide to the best places to stay in Monterosso, Cinque Terre.
Monterosso is the biggest village in the Cinque Terre and is the only village with a proper beach. The beach in Monterosso is long, narrow and pebbled and you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach. There is also a selection of small beach bars dotted along the beach.
There are two parts to Monterosso – the ‘new town’, which is where the train station and the beach are located. A short walk away is the ‘old town’ which has narrow cobbled streets and lots of cute restaurants and cafes.
One of the best things to do in Monterosso is to hike the blue trail which connects to Vernazza – it follows mostly past vineyards high up in the cliff tops. Or you can sample some awesome wine in Buranco Vineyard (which happens to be where we married).
The larger hotels are in the ‘new town’ while most of the Airbnb’s are in the old town. Monterosso definitely has the most accommodation options and is, in my opinion, the most family-friendly village in the Cinque Terre.
Here are the absolute best places to stay in Monterosso, Cinque Terre. I’ve visited Monterosso many times, in fact, we got married here, so we have tried and tested most of these stunning hotels & airbnb’s. We hope you will enjoy Monterosso as much as we do!
Is Monterosso a Good Base for Cinque Terre?
Yes, Monterosso is a good base for exploring the glorious Cinque Terre. It’s the largest village of the 5 villages in the Cinque Terre and so, offers the most accommodation and restaurant options. Monterosso’s other claim to fame is that it’s home to the only beach in the Cinque Terre, yup, Fegina beach in the new town is a long, stunning beach that has sun beds and parasols and some beach bars. There’s also a small beach in the old town of Monterosso.
Monterosso is very family-friendly, and I’d go so far as to say that it’s the best place to base yourself in the Cinque Terre if you’re traveling with kids. That’s because it’s not as hilly as the other villages and offers several kid-friendly restaurants.
