Dealing with pregnancy during lockdown – my top self-care tips to ensure your pregnancy journey is as smooth as possible.
Lockdown is certainly not how I imagined my second trimester of pregnancy would be. These are strange times and adding a pregnancy to the mix certainly makes things more stressful. Here, in New Zealand lockdown means we can leave the house only to go to the supermarket/ doctor/pharmacy or for a walk in our neighborhood. I know that other countries have less-restrictive regulations. Plus, this is my first pregnancy so I’m kind of doing it all without experience.
Anyway, here are some things I’ve implemented into my daily routine to help me deal with my pregnancy during lockdown. I hope it helps you too.
Take more naps
I was blessed pre-pregnancy, I was one of those people who never napped – I never needed to. But boy, did that change in my first trimester of pregnancy. Now naps are a daily occurrence for me- never for too long, as it will mess up my night-time sleep. A 40 minute nap is ideal for most pregnant women. I typically have my nap at 3 pm and when I wake up have a single shot coffee to keep me refreshed.
Change up your skincare routine
You may find in pregnancy that your skin changes, be that for better or for worse. My skin thankfully improved. I’ve switched to more natural skincare products to ensure I’m not putting anything too harmful or strong on my skin. I love brands like Simple (cheap & cheerful) and The Ordinary. Although, with The Ordinary be mindful to not try anything too hash – I love their Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid products.
Listen to calm music
Classical music especially is said to have a calming effect on your unborn baby due to the melodic, lullaby sound. There are lots of playlists available on Spotify. Or if you don’t have Spotify then, Youtube will have some choice.
Take some time off social media each day
The news, newspapers and even social media feeds at the moment seem to only be filled with bad news. You don’t want to add any more stress during an already stressful time. Plus, a lot of the information on social media in regards to COVID-19 can be false and misleading. Instead, take a few hours off social media every day and instead watch your favourite TV show or movie. Studies have proven that watching an old favourite on the TV can combat stress.
Do prenatal yoga
There are several benefits to pre-natal yoga including improved sleep and reduced stress. During lockdown you you can do pre-natal yoga online for a small fee. Yoga Anytime comes highly recommended and costs from $18 USD per month. You can then watch the yoga classes on your laptop or stream it to your TV.
Spring clean your house
Studies have proven that a good spring clean can clear the mind, as it helps you feel you have “things under control”. Take it slowly though, you don’t want to do much in one day. Also, be careful not to use cleaning products with harsh chemicals – natural cleaning products are always a safe bet.
Start planning for the baby’s arrival
Make a list of what you need for your new arrival – clothes, cribs, toys etc. Is there anything you can borrow from friends or family to save money.
Depending on how far along you are, you may want to start packing your overnight bag for the hospital so that you’re prepared.
Make a start on the nursery
Why not get ahead of yourself and make a start on the baby’s nursery. Browse Pinterest for decor inspiration and if possible purchase the items online (considering as during lockdown a lot of stores physical locations will be closed). Be careful not to do any painting during pregnancy, as the fumes can be harmful to the baby. Ask your partner to do any painting required.
